Procurement Agreement with ALLISON TRANSMISSION for Next-Generation Fırtına Howitzers
An important step has been taken for the Turkish Armed Forces’ Next-Generation T-155 Fırtına Howitzer project. ALLISON TRANSMISSION has reached an agreement with HST OTOMOTİV for the procurement of 32 transmission systems under the second phase of the project.
The U.S.-based company ALLISON TRANSMISSION announced that it continues its cooperation with its licensed manufacturer in Turkey, HST OTOMOTİV. In the company’s statement, it was emphasized that the newly signed agreement in the second phase includes the supply of the Allison X1100-5A4 cross-drive transmission for the Next-Generation T-155 Fırtına Howitzer project of the Turkish Armed Forces. With this agreement, the second phase of the cooperation between the parties begins, and it was stated that the contract value is approximately 100 million USD. Second-phase deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
ALLISON TRANSMISSION Vice President of Defense Programs, Dana Pittard, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing cooperation as follows:
“We are honored to continue our collaboration with HST OTOMOTİV. We will keep working together to provide reliable and durable solutions tailored to the demanding needs of the defense sector. Our cross-drive transmissions, which are engineering marvels recognized worldwide, enable vehicles to overcome harsh terrain conditions more powerfully, while also enhancing the safety of soldiers.”
ALLISON TRANSMISSION X1100 Cross-Drive Transmission
This transmission is designed for heavy tracked combat vehicles weighing between 45 and 63 tons. It features a design that integrates four forward and two reverse gears along with steering and braking functions into a single compact unit. The X1100-5A4 operates smoothly even in defense operations requiring low engine RPM.
10 Transmissions Delivered in the First Contract
Under the first-phase agreement between Allison and HST OTOMOTİV, 10 transmission units were successfully delivered to Turkey as of 2024. It is projected that a total of 140 to 160 Fırtına Howitzers will be produced for the Turkish Armed Forces.
Initial deliveries of the Next-Generation Fırtına Howitzer began in 2021, but were postponed until 2023 due to supply issues with engines and transmissions. With the improvement of diplomatic relations between Turkey and the United States, deliveries resumed at the end of 2023.
